Who We Are

Our Herd includes incredible horses that are partners in our program.

The Herd is also the people who gather, individuals living with dementia, their care partners, facilitators, volunteers, and horses, each bringing their own experience, pace, and presence into a shared space. Together, they form a community grounded in trust, respect, and understanding.

At the heart of the Herd is a simple belief: people living with dementia remain capable of living meaningful lives and sustaining relationships. While dementia changes the dynamics of a relationship, it does not end the relationship itself. Over time, caregiving can become isolating, and familiar roles can narrow or collapse, leaving both people feeling unseen and disconnected. Healing and connection do not happen in isolation—and the Herd exists to interrupt that pattern.

“(We) enjoyed everything...nice to step away from the role (caregiving) and enjoy something with my dad.”

- Lisa

Care Partner

Horses play a unique role within the Herd. Their calm presence, sensitivity, and responsiveness create opportunities for connection that do not rely on words or memory. Horses meet participants exactly where they are, offering moments of grounding, confidence, and collaboration.

Within the Herd, roles soften. Care partners are encouraged to step out of the constant caregiver role, while people living with dementia are supported in expressing independence, choice, and presence—participating rather than being managed. Through shared activities and time together, partnerships are strengthened and a sense of camaraderie naturally emerges.

The Herd is a reminder that no one has to walk the dementia journey alone. Here, connection is built through experience, community grows through shared understanding, and every participant belongs.

Meet the Team

Meet the experienced and compassionate team guiding The Herd’s mission and program.

“It Takes a Herd was created with love and respect for those walking through the journey that is dementia. It is my hope that care partners and their care recipients will laugh during moments of normalcy, learn through effective communication and have fun TOGETHER during this program while also finding the support and encouragement from other participants in ‘The Herd.’”
